It is possible to convert a Sunbeam to the spiral bevel gear drive as used in the Russian 650cc Dnieper or Ural motorcycles . These come in solo and sidecar ratios which are almost equal to Sunbeam ones , and now that Urals are being imported again spares are readily available . To do this you need a fairly large lathe , a vertical miller , a band saw , and some skill in their use .
I have to say at this point that while this modification does work very well , the fully Synthetic "Tellus" oil in a standard Sunbeam rear drive is such an improvement that for the average owner it is what I would recommend , ( See the section on Transmission ) .
However if you are thinking of seriously increasing the power of a Sunbeam by building something like the "Phoenix" with it's 50 BHP , then converting the rear drive is a very good idea .
